Harley-Davidson Announces Project LiveWire, First Ever HD Electric Motorcycle

Whether you’re talking about riding on the open road or designing new innovative bikes, Harley-Davidson has always been the leader of the pack. It’s in the blood of all Harley riders – we just don’t settle for second place. That’s why the designers at Harley-Davidson are once again ahead of the competition with a new announcement that they’re inviting customers to test Project LiveWire, an all-electric motorcycle that performs like the Harley motorcycles you love but doesn’t require a single drop of gas.

Harley-Davidson engineers say that the bike is nothing like the quiet and dull electric motorcycles currently on the market. The unique sound it creates is reminiscent of a fighter jet, and the high-performing motor can produce tire-shredding acceleration despite being run entirely by electricity. New Harley-Davidson regenerative braking can save even more energy by charging the battery every time the brakes are activated.

“America at its best has always been about reinvention,” said Matt Levatich, president and COO, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “And, like America, Harley-Davidson has reinvented itself many times in our history, with customers leading us every step of the way. Project LiveWire is another exciting, customer-led moment in our history.”

Riders across the country are testing Project LiveWire and giving feedback, allowing Harley-Davidson to design the product around its customers as it has always done. The motorcycles are not on sale, and Harley won’t make any decisions about bringing Project LiveWire to market in the near future. And of course, for those who just can’t substitute the sweet sound of Harley-Davidson’s V-Twin engine, the traditional gas-powered bikes won’t be leaving you anytime soon.

We can’t wait to see how this project will progress, and we’re hoping to test one of these prototypes out at our New Hampshire Harley-Davidson dealership in the future. It’s just one example of Harley-Davidson’s constant commitment to staying ahead of the game with consumer-driven innovations.
