Harley-Davidson Flat-Track Racing to Kick Off X Games Austin 2015
The hotly anticipated X Games are right around the corner, and Harley riders and motorcycle fans everywhere will find something new to look forward to the moment the competition begins. Harley-Davidson Flat-Track racing will start off the 2015 X Games, marking the first time the sport has been included in the legendary event. The team at our Harley-Davidson dealership near Nashua, NH, can’t wait to catch all the action!
In June, X Games Austin 2015 will get underway, and the very first event will be the flat-track race. This sport may be debuting at the X Games for the first time this summer, but it’s a very old racing discipline, nearly as old as motorcycles themselves. Racers ride bikes with high power-to-weight ratios and no front brakes around an ovular dirt track. When carving out corners at high speeds, the bikes lean hard to the side and slide, so the racers actually wear custom steel shoes on their left feet so that they can physically lead the bike around the corners. It really brings a whole new meaning to the words “floor it!”
Twenty-four competitors will be taking part in the event, with that number being cut in half after the qualifying round. In flat-track racing events at places like the Springfield Mile, bikes with 750cc twin cylinder engines can drive at speeds upwards of 130 mph. At this year’s X Games, racers won’t travel quite that fast, as the tracks are shorter. Laps are expected to take between 20 and 25 seconds to complete.
Are you excited about the premiere of the Harley-Davidson flat-track race? Don’t miss them on the opening night of the X Games on June 4!
